Overcoming Demons and Embracing Ultra Running: Jose Ramirez's Bigfoot 200 Journey
Runs a negative split on his first try!
Welcome runners! Today, we're excited to feature an extraordinary journey of one of our local trail runners, Jose Ramirez, who recently completed the challenging Bigfoot 200 trail race. Join us as we dive into how Jose conquered his demons, achieved a negative split on his first 200-mile race, and what his future holds.
A Passion for the Outdoors and Mental Health
Jose Ramirez's love for trail running is deeply rooted in his passion for the outdoors. A bow hunter by hobby, being in nature has always been a significant part of his life. Running, for Jose, goes beyond physical wellness; it's a cornerstone of mental health. "I think running is such a great way to stimulate good habits and really enjoy the outdoors. It helps with mental health," Jose shared.
Rapid Evolution in Trail Running
Remarkably, within just five years of stepping into trail running, Jose has reached milestones that many seasoned runners aspire to achieve. Reflecting on his first 50K race, Jose recalls the challenge, "I was very unprepared, but I had the mindset to finish. It was tough, but I got through it." The following year was no different as Jose took on a 50 miler at Badger Mountain. "I just wanted to keep pushing," he said. "The 50-mile race went better than my 50K. My legs needed to be in better shape for the climbs."
Handling Setbacks and Learning
Like every runner, Jose faced his share of setbacks. His first attempt at a 100-mile race resulted in an injury, as did his friend's during support at the Tiana Way. However, these experiences only fueled his resolve. "Seeing other trail runners talk about their races sparked that seed within me. I knew a 100-mile race would be part of my journey to a 200-mile race."
Training for the Bigfoot 200
Surprisingly, Jose didn't partake in many races between his 100-mile and 200-mile endeavors. Training amidst work and family commitments, Jose often faced questions about his unconventional regimen. Yet, he maintained his focus: "My work isn't training for endurance, but it builds a lot of grit. I give myself 12 to 14 weeks of intense training and try to fit long runs over weekends." Jose's rigorous preparation included leg-strengthening climbs up Mount Eleanor and Mount Washington.
Tackling Challenges Head-On
The Bigfoot 200 course featured two grueling 100-mile loops. The first loop presented some significant challenges for Jose. "My heart rate was too elevated, and my stomach was all over the place," he recounted. The turning point came thanks to the aid station medics who helped him rehydrate and get back on track. Supporting each other is crucial in the ultra-running community. Jose's spirits soared seeing his crew at the turnaround point, providing a much-needed morale boost.
Mental Fortitude and Focus
Staying positive and maintaining a strong mindset were crucial for Jose. "I did a lot of praying and meditation throughout the race. Positive thinking can drive your energy to skyrocket, as long as you're eating and drinking enough." Jose finished his first 100-mile loop under less-than-ideal conditions but managed the second loop six hours faster, driven by sheer determination and a strategic mindset.
What's Next for Jose
Following his extraordinary accomplishment at Bigfoot 200, Jose plans to take the rest of the year off to recover and train. However, his eyes are already set on future challenges. In 2024, he aims to return to the Badger Mountain 100 to achieve a new personal record. In addition, Jose has plans for more 100-mile races and ultimately aims to return to the Bigfoot 200 in 2026 to improve his time. Jose’s journey in ultra-running is nothing short of inspirational. His rapid advancement, resilience in the face of setbacks, and unwavering positive mindset serve as a testament to what can be achieved with determination and passion.
